You Can’t Win Them All

My oh my, this past month has been a time of tough love coming from me it seems. Recently, I’ve let loose some heavy words and reality checks in the open both privately and publicly. And I know in the process I’ve likely made some people unhappy.

“For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.” – Galatians 1:10

But here’s the thing I’ve finally come to understand and find peace with these past few years… You will never, I repeat NEVER make everyone happy that comes into your life. If you’re trying to, you gotta stop for sanity’s sake. Because you can’t and you won’t be able to. If you’re still stuck in the habit of people pleasing, you need to understand that not everyone is going to like you. You’re going to have to make choices and do things in this life that will not sit well with some people. Whether it’s because of family obligations, business, personal development, or because of your spiritual life, it’s going to happen.

“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.” – John 15:18-20

When you follow hard after God and truly seek to live out His will in your life, you WILL face staunch opposition. When you fight for righteousness’ sake, it’s going to make people really mad and they very well may lash out at you in a multitude of ways, even people you once considered your closest companions. There will be people who walk away and leave you. There will be people who talk about you behind your back. You will be rejected, criticized, and mocked. But what other people say or believe about you is really none of your business. And when people get nasty at you it really has nothing to do with you and everything to do with their own hurts and fears.

So darling, please, don’t sweat it. Stop striving to please everyone. Stop playing small or hiding your light to try to make other people comfortable. Stop trying to win everyone over, because that’s not your job. Only the Holy Spirit can soften those hardened hearts. All you need to do is keep your eyes and heart focused on Him and He will show you how to live. Walk in love and grace and you will be able to traverse through the most painful heartbreaks. And even though we must face these hard things, it’s all worth it to walk a life of victory in Christ, because He is walking with us through every fire and flood.
