Whom the Son Sets Free

“If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” – John 8:36

That feeling of awe when you wake up the first morning after being delivered from something terrible that has haunted you for over a decade… that’s me today. Glory be unto GOD for HE is able to do all things. He is the author and finisher of our faith. It is in Him that we put our full trust and hope for what He has ALREADY done to set us free, for the power He has ALREADY given us. We ARE free. Yet so often, we don’t choose to live in that freedom. We choose to walk right back into our slavery…

“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:1-2 (ESV)

When we accept Christ, the old person inside us dies and we are a new creation. And from that point, we are called to be a living sacrifice unto God. When we accept Him, we become part of His family, children of God. But being that we are made ALIVE in Him, we are also alive and able to crawl right off that sacrificial altar and back to the desires of that dead person we once were. And many times we do. But there is help…

“This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” – Galatians 5:16 (ESV)

When we become His children, we receive the Spirit of Christ and the hope of glory in us. And from that moment, we are able to choose to walk in it every single moment. But it is a choice and as His children we have the power to resist any temptation by consciously choosing to rely on the Holy Spirit to guide our thoughts, words, and deeds. We can hold fast against the temptations that seek to turn our focus back to our former lives and the desires of our flesh when we surrender and fill ourselves with His Word.

“But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.” James 4:6-10 (ESV)

Beloved, there are things in this world that are far more powerful than we often realize, things we may think nothing of. The power of our words and deeds, the things we spend our time on or watch on tv or listen to or read, they can have spiritual consequences invisible to our eyes, yet oh so real. There is a war raging on around us, one we can’t see directly with our eyes, but one that will take us as prisoners if we allow it. Our adversary the devil is cunning and lurking at every corner, waiting for us to let him in. But the LORD has given us the power to resist. We are His body, and when we walk in the Spirit and not the flesh, we shall do His will here on earth. Hold fast.

“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” – 1 Corinthians 10:13 (ESV)
